What is a softphone, and do you still need a desk phone?

A softphone is software that turns a device you already own, your laptop, your cell phone, a tablet, into a full business phone. Instead of a plastic handset wired to the wall, the Voipcom softphone app uses your internet connection to make and take calls on your business number, with the same dialer, hold, transfer, and recording you would expect from a desk phone. There is no separate hardware to buy, no extension trapped at one desk, and no charger cable to find. The phone system simply lives wherever you happen to be working that day.

For most Phoenix and Denver teams, a good softphone app makes the physical desk phone optional rather than mandatory.
